SUBJECT WITH A GUN - Update
On March 29, 2023, at about 12:16 am., deputies assigned to the Northwest Patrol Station responded to a call at the 7600 block of Campos St., in reference to a male subject with a gun. Responding deputies were notified that the male subject had fled the area in a white vehicle after displaying a handgun at an adult female and juvenile daughter. Responding deputies arrived in the area and located a vehicle matching the description. Deputies conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle several yards from the intersection of Campos Rd and Bosque Rd.
During the stop, deputies attempted to contact the male subject and take him into custody. The male subject was given multiple commands. However, he refused to comply with the requests. A taser was utilized and deployed but proved ineffective in controlling the male subject. During that time, the male subject was seen pulling out a handgun. Deputies continued issuing verbal commands. However, the male subject refused to comply with the officers. The male subject was subsequently shot several times. Deputies immediately began lifesaving measures until emergency medical services arrived on the scene. The male subject was taken to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The male subject has been identified as 43-year-old Isaiah James Rael. No other injuries were reported, and a handgun was recovered.
The El Paso County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division – Major Crimes Unit, El Paso County Sheriff's Office Shooting Review Team, and Texas Rangers of the Texas Department of Public Safety are investigating the incident. The deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave, which is routine in an officer-involved shooting.
