Altercation resulting in one death

El Paso, Texas - On January 29th, 2022 at about 10:20 am the Socorro Police Department received a call at 10005 Alameda Ave, parking lot of the Vista Quality Market, in reference to a fight in progress with a subject down. Officers from the Socorro Police Department arrived at 10:23 am and observed two males, one standing and one laying on the ground unresponsive with no signs of life. The preliminary investigation determined that one male had died as a result of an altercation. The Socorro Police Department requested the El Paso County Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Unit. The Major Crimes Unit assumed the investigation and determined that 78-year-old Rogelio Gonzalez died from wounds suffered during an altercation with 40-year-old Chauhtemoc Sanchez Espinoza. Espinoza has been booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility for Murder with a $1,000,000.00 bond.

WANTED SEX OFFENDER - BRUCE ORVILLE CLIFTON

January 25, 2022

El Paso, TXOn January 21, 2021, Bruce Orville Clifton absconded from the El Paso Multi-Use Facility located in Horizon, TX. He was allowed to go to work but never returned to the facility and his whereabouts are now unknown. He is now wanted on a Parole Violation warrant and an additional charge of Sex Offenders Duty to Register is forthcoming. His last location according to his GPS monitor was the 600 block of S. Santa Fe, El Paso, TX. His sex offense(s) are two counts of Sexual Assault of a Child, the victim being a 13- and 14-year-old female, and Sexual Battery, the victim being a 34-year-old female. He is currently on parole for Sexual Assault of a Child

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT – LOCK IT OR LOOSE IT

El Paso, Texas – The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the public to lock your vehicle, trunk, or tailgate and to take the keys with you. Close all windows and remove or secure and hide cellphones, stereos, valuables, wallets, purses, and packages. No matter what kind of car you drive, all vehicles are a potential target of theft. Nearly 60,000 cars and trucks are stolen in Texas each year, thousands more are burglarized. Almost half of all stolen vehicles had the keys left inside.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is concerned for the safety and security of your personal belongings. Vehicle burglaries are very common, yet very easy to prevent. These crimes are happening, especially if your car is parked outside at night. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office values the trust you have in us, and we will honestly and ethically carry out our responsibilities. We work Hand-In-Hand with our community and seek your assistance and cooperation in keeping our community safe.

ASSAULT ON A SHERIFF DEPUTY–UPDATE

January 24, 2022

UPDATE El Paso, TEXAS - On Monday January 24, 2022, El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Detectives with the Peter John Herrera Patrol station obtained a warrant of arrest for Jeremy Coltharp. He will be rebooked at the El Paso County Detention Facility for Aggravated Robbery with a $100,000 bond.

El Paso, Texas –  On Friday, January 21st, 2022 at approximately 7:15 pm, a Sheriff Deputy and EPPD Officer were working an off-duty assignment at the Walmart located at 7101 Gateway West when they were attacked by the subject Jeremy Coltharp with a knife and chain. 

The Friday before, on January 14th Coltharp, had assaulted a Walmart sales clerk but fled before he was arrested by the off-duty officers. He returned Friday, January 21st, the Sheriff Deputy and EPPD officer recognized Coltharp and approached him when he then attacked them with a knife. The Sheriff Deputy tased subject Coltharp to get him to drop the knife. Coltharp was taken into custody by EPPD for aggravated assault on a peace officer. No injuries were reported.

ASSISTANCE WITH IDENTIFICATION

January 19, 2022

El Paso, Texas On December 15, 2021, at 7:15 p.m., a fire was reported at the El Paso County Courthouse. El Paso County Sheriff's Office Deputies investigated the incident and found that unknown juveniles broke the fire extinguisher cases and retrieved four extinguishers from floors 3, 5, 6, and 7. The juveniles were seen on the 3rd floor spraying the fire extinguishers all over the county parking garage causing First Responders to respond to the alleged smoke. The juveniles then exited the parking lot and ran towards Apodaca Bail Bonds. If anyone has information on the possible identity of these four juveniles, please contact Detective E Orozco at 538-2185. See attached photographs.

On behalf of Sheriff Wiles we want to thank and recognize our Sheriff’s Office Community Service along with Commander Ryan Urrutia and his wife Laura for helping raise money for our little ones at El Paso Children's Hospital. They answered phone calls and took donations from the community.

Theft prevention and traffic law education at a new school site

NEWS RELEASE: El Paso, Texas - On Wednesday, January 12, 2022, deputies and detectives assigned to the East Montana Patrol Station held a meeting at the construction site located at 12750 Bob Hope Dr.  This will be the future site of Socorro Independent School District (Elementary-Middle) for the children in the new residential area of Horizon.

The meeting was held for construction Supervisors and employees, for the purpose of  theft prevention/reduction and traffic law education. Sergeants, deputies, and detectives educated employees on how to prevent crime in active construction areas, accomplished by properly securing all building materials inside locked shipment containers.  Employees were advised to contact their supervisors when there is missing property to initiate police reports as a deterrent to inside theft.  The Sheriff's Office briefed the audience on the necessity of directed patrol in construction areas as well as the responsibility taken by the construction community with securing buildings, materials, tools, and appliances.

Employees were reminded of the traffic laws such as speed limits in the residential areas and parking violations.

Aggravated Assault with Deadly Weapon and Criminal Mischief

NEWS RELEASE: El Paso, Texas – On January 13, 2022, El Paso County Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched to the 4000 block of Desert Meadows in reference to a Family Assault. The victim was parked in front of a tire shop with her daughter, when the estranged father of her Daughter, broke the window extracting the toddler. Upon arrival, deputies determined that the male subject, identified as 23 year old Jesus Andres Alonso had used a large rock to break the window of the victim's vehicle. He then removed the toddler from the vehicle. Deputies quickly searched the area and located Mr. Alonso carrying his Daughter at the 3800 block of Gwendolyn Dr.  The offender was detained and arrested. The toddler was safely returned to her mother. Mr. Alonso was charged with Aggravated Assault and Criminal Mischief and was booked under a $22,500 bond.

AGGRAVATED ASSAULT at the 4700 block of Turf Road

January 10, 2022

El Paso, Texas On January 8, 2022, El Paso County Sheriff’s Office East Montana Patrol Deputies responded to an altercation between two neighbors at the 4700 block of Turf Road. An argument ensued over the Victim’s attempting to quiet his neighbor’s dogs.  The owner of the canines became irate and pointed a handgun at the Victim. The suspect was identified as 22 year old Preston Henderson. Henderson was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. His bond was set at $15,000. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

SHERIFF’S OFFICE HOSTS SPECIAL RESPONSE TEAM SCHOOLS

El Paso, Texas The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Region VIII Training Academy has been hosting a Special Response Team School, January 3rd to January 7th, 2022. 

The school has provided training to the Otero County Prison Facility Emergency Response Team, Immigration and Customs Enforcement Prison Camp Disturbance Control Team, and the Sheriff’s Office Detention Officers Special Response Team. The different agencies participating in this course have made the completion of this training a requirement for their officers. 40 officers and 9 instructors are participating in this course which has consisted of Emergency medical cell extractions, less-lethal riot control, and leadership.

Both Sheriff’s Office Region VIII Academy and Otero County Prison Facility have been used as training locations. Media day is scheduled for Friday, January 7, 2022, at 10:00 am. MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT AT 13000 BLOCK OF CAMPO BELLO RD.

January 4, 2022

El Paso, Texas On December 31st, 2021, at approximately 10:30 am, The El Paso County Sheriff's Office Special Traffic Investigators were requested at the 13000 block of Campo Bello Rd. in reference to a motor vehicle accident involving serious injuries. Both driver and a 16-year-old passenger were transported to a local area hospital with the passenger having life-threatening injuries. The driver was also admitted to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. This is an ongoing investigation. As we receive information, it will be released.
