What is Fraud, Waste and Abuse?

Fraud is attempting to obtain something of value through willful misrepresentation.

Examples include:

• • Inflating hours worked
  • Stealing cash or checks
  • Forging official documents

Waste is squandering money or resources, event if not explicitly illegal.

Examples include:

• • Buying overpriced equipment from a favored vendor
  • Trashing equipment instead of returning to County inventory
  • Buying unnecessary equipment or supplies

Abuse is behaving improperly or unreasonable or misusing one's position or authority.

Examples include:

• • Using County equipment for personal gain
  • Writing contracts or specifications to favor a specific vendor
  • Using taxpayer information for personal gain
