Commissioner Leon Presents Resolution Recognizing “Our Lives Disabilities Conference and Service Providers Expo”

On October 27, 2014, Commissioner Carlos Leon and the court recognized the fourteenth anniversary of "Our Lives Disabilities Conference and Service Providers Expo 2014" during Monday’s Commissioners Court meeting.  Volar Center for Independent Living and Centro de Salud La Fe were there to accept the resolution.

For the past 34 years Volar Center for Independent Living has led the way towards
counteracting years of discrimination by acknowledging individuals with disabilities as a vital part of El Paso and West Texas society.

Volar Center for Independent Living has influenced many individuals to improve their quality of life and become responsible, contributing citizens. This organization has proudly chosen Centro de Salud Familiar La Fe, Inc. as its 2014 “Our Lives Partner” in its ongoing efforts to expand its outreach to El Paso’s at risk disabilities community.

La Fe, founded in 1968, has flourished as a Hispanic community leader through its
community health and cultural centers by providing comprehensive services, including healthcare services.

Montwood Drive Construction Update: October 27, 2014

Reconstruction project requires closure of Wedgewood Drive near Montwood

The City of El Paso's Engineering and Construction Management Department has scheduled a road closure for Wedgewood Drive at Montwood Drive beginning on Monday, October 27, 2014.

This closure will run through the month of December, and will help facilitate the installation of new underground utilities for the Montwood reconstruction project, and will remain in place through December.

THRU TRAFFIC DETOURS

Northbound and southbound motorists on Wedgewood will be required to follow marked detour routes on Montwood Drive, McRae Boulevard, and Album Avenue.

Eastbound and westbound traffic on Montwood, which is already reduced to one lane in each direction, will not be impacted. 

SUN METRO IMPACTS

Sun Metro will be required to detour Route 52. Sun Metro drivers will make courtesy stops along the detoured route as required. This detour is subject to change depending on traffic. 

Buses traveling outbound, north on Wedgewood will turn left onto Montwood, right onto Camwood, left onto Wedgewood returning to the regular route.

Buses traveling inbound, south on Wedgewood will turn right onto Honolulu, right onto Ceylon, left onto Bermuda, right onto McRae, left onto Glengarry, left onto Berwick, right onto McRae, left onto Montwood, right onto Wedgewood returning to the regular route. Montwood Drive Construction Update: October 16, 2014

PAVING ACTIVITIES

On Montwood:

Workers are pouring the concrete for the north lane of Montwood at Camwood.

Workers are pouring the concrete at Montwood between Trinidad to Linum.

Workers are also pouring the concrete for Montwood's north lane at Camwood.

Contractors are paving the south lane of Montwood on Monaco.

Workers will continue to pave Montwood's north lane at Honolulu.

Workers are installing the rebar for Montwood's inner lane from Trinidad to Linum in preparation for paving activities which will occur in the near future.

On Montwood Drive:

The contractor finished pouring the walls and tops for the box culverts on Montwood between Linum and Wedgewood.

Posted detours remain in place along Montwood Drive between McRae and Yarbrough. Eastbound and westbound traffic will continue traveling in the lanes south of the median.

On Montwood:

The contractor has started to prepare the area on Montwood between Fir and Camwood for future paving activities.

On Montwood Drive:

The contractor has just recently finished pouring concrete for the walls, tops and floors for the box culverts on Montwood between Linum and Wedgewood.

Workers finished pouring the concrete for the sidewalks and driveways on Montwood between Honolulu and Monaco, and they also installed the curbson Montwood between Monaco and Camwood.

DETOURS

Posted detours remain in place along Montwood Drive between McRae and Yarbrough. Eastbound and westbound traffic will continue traveling in the lanes south of the median.

Commissioner Leon Attends El Paso County Northwest Annex Grand Opening: September 10, 2014

Commissioner Carlos Leon attended the El Paso County Northwest Annex Grand Opening this morning located at 435 E. Vinton Road in Vinton, Texas.

County Judge Veronica Escobar, along with county commissioners Carlos Leon, Vince Perez, Sergio Lewis and ceremonial host Patrick Abeln were present to do the ribbon cutting ceremony. Constituents are able to receive several services at the Northwest Annex as they would at the El Paso County Courthouse.

On Montwood Drive:

Contractors are currently installing the box culvert walls, floors and tops on Montwood between Linum and Wedgewood.

On Montwood:

Workers also recently completed the concrete paving for the outer lane of vehicular traffic on Montwood from the intersection of Fir to Honolulu.

Contractors are currently installing rebar on Montwood's inner lane from Fir to Honolulu in preparation for paving activities, which are soon to follow.

Workers are also preparing the area on Montwood from Honolulu to Camwood for the pouring of concrete, which will occur in the near future.

Detours are once again posted along Montwood Drive between McRae  and Yarbrough -- eastbound and westbound traffic will once again be travelling in the lanes south of the median.

Montwood Drive Construction Update: August 14, 2014

 

DETOURS

Posted detours remain in place along Montwood Drive between McRae and Yarbrough. Eastbound and westbound traffic will continue traveling in the lanes south of the median.

The only exception to this detour will be for Westbound traffic traveling on Montwood between Wedgewood and Linum. Westbound traffic on Montwood will have to detour South onto Wedgewood and then North to McRae in order to reconnect with Montwood Drive.

This portion of Montwood is and will remain closed for approximately one week.

On Montwood:

The contractor is currently pouring the culvert walls and tops on Montwood between Camwood and Linum.

The contractor for El Paso Water Utilities has removed an abandoned 20” water main on Montwood and between Wedgewood and Linum.

Workers have also finished pouring concrete for the sidewalks and wheel-chair ramps on Montwood between McRae and Honolulu.

PAVING ACTIVITIES

On Montwood:

Contractors are continuing to compact the subgrade on Montwood between McRae and Trinidad.

Commissioner Leon Welcomes Blake’s LOTABURGER to the Eastside

Commissioner Carlos Leon attended Blake’s LOTABURGER grand opening on Saturday, August 9, 2014. Blake’s LOTABURGER opened their 2nd El Paso location on Edgemere and Tierra Este.

Commissioner Leon presented Blake’s LOTABURGER with a Certificate of Appreciation and expressed the importance of local business, as it plays an essential role in making strong communities. Local businesses like Blake’s LOTABURGER also creates more job opportunities for our growing county, enriching the community and bringing families together.

Blake Chanslor opened his first LOTABURGER stand in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1952. Blake’s LOTABURGER have expanded throughout the state of New Mexico, and El Paso.

Commissioner Carlos Leon Attends Sheriff’s Office 4th Annual National Night Out

On Tuesday, August 5, 2014, Commissioner Leon attended the Sheriff’s Office 4th Annual National Night Out. This event raises awareness on local crime and provides an opportunity for constituents to engage with local law enforcement.

The National Night Out event had emergency vehicles on display from different agencies, health/safety awareness booths and activities for children.

National Night Out began in 1984 to promote an opportunity for neighborhoods to engage in crime prevention activities and police-community partnerships. The National Night Out Program is held on the first Tuesday in August.

Montwood Drive Construction Update: August 1, 2014

PAVING ACTIVTIES

On Montwood Drive:

Contractors have just recently completed pouring concrete for the roadway at the Montwood and McRae intersection.

From McRae to the first inlet at Fir St. the roadway has been processed and compacted in preparation for paving activities, which are soon to follow.

Contractors installed box culvert walls and tops at Montwood between Camwood and Linum.

On Montwood, workers are also continuing to trench and prepare the subgrade for additional box culverts.

On Windrock:

The City’s contractor has installed temporary stop signs on Windrock, and has opened street to vehicular traffic.

On Montwood:

Contractors are currently pouring sidewalk and wheel chair ramps on the Northern said of Montwood between Zanzibar and Windrock.

New curbs are also being installed on Montwood: on both sides of the road between McRae to Honolulu.

The contractor for the El Paso Water Utilities is continuing to remove an abandoned 20” water main on Montwood between Wedgewood and Windrock.

Commissioner Leon’s Roundtable Advisory Board Visits Downtown Detention Facility

Commissioner Carlos Leon’s Roundtable took a tour of the El Paso County Detention Facility on July 16, 2014. This maximum security facility is located at 601 E. Overland with a housing capacity of 1000 inmates.

On this highly informative tour, the advisory board was able to see first-hand the daily duties and management that the jail requires on a routine basis. During the two hour tour, Detention Officer Telles and Commander Vargas thoroughly answered an array of questions asked by the board.    

Commissioner Carlos Leon Hosts Eastside Annex Groundbreaking Ceremony

Commissioner Leon hosted the Eastside Annex Groundbreaking Ceremony on Tuesday, July 15, 2014 to mark the beginning of a much anticipated project. Judge Escobar spoke about the many benefits the county will have by building the Eastside Annex on county property.

Constituents will be able to receive several services at the Eastside Annex as they would at the County Courthouse. In addition to the offices, the Eastside Annex will include a community meeting room that will have the capacity to seat 100.

The opening of the Eastside Annex will offer constituents convenient access to county offices and services, improving communication with their elected officials.

· County Commissioner Precinct 1

· Justice of the Peace Precinct 4

· Constable Precinct 4

· Adult Probation

· County Clerk

Montwood Drive Construction Update: July 14, 2014

PAVING ACTIVITES

On Montwood Drive:

The contractor has finished paving the north side of Montwood between Zanzibar and Windrock.

On Windrock:

The contractor has finished placing the base course between Buckwood and Montwood, and is now compacting the area in preparation for paving activities that are soon to follow.

On Montwood Drive:

Between Honolulu and Monaco the contractor completed the box culvert walls, tops and floors.

Trenches for box culverts, which were previously poured on Trinidad and Honolulu were backfilled.

Commissioner Carlos Leon Participates in the 2014 Fourth of July Parade

Commissioner Leon walked the Fourth of July parade this past holiday weekend in East El Paso.

The El Paso Del Norte Lions Club presented their annual “The People’s Parade,” this past Friday for the Fourth of July holiday. The two mile parade walk started at Hanks High School, went through Montwood Drive and Yarbrough, and down to Album Park.

We are especially thankful for the kindhearted welcome and thoughtful words that were expressed as we proudly walked the streets of East El Paso.

Commissioner Leon Visits Facility Housing Immigrant Children and Families

El Paso has recently been experiencing an influx of unaccompanied minors and families from Central American countries, including El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala. These unaccompanied children are in extreme need of shelter, clothes and food, as they are attempting to flee their country of origin to escape violence and poverty.

On July 1, 2014, Commissioner Carlos Leon went to a facility that is currently housing some of these children and their families. “Regardless of political views, these are children that are here now and need our help,” stated Commissioner Leon.

The El Paso community can help by volunteering and giving donations to help aid these facilities. Please contact Annunciation House at 915-545-4509 to help.
