Green Speak
Solar Energy Burns Bright
The County of El Paso in conjunction with the Border Fair Housing and the University of Texas at El Paso, hosted a two day-long event featuring presenters of energy efficiency, weatherizing, recycling and the benefits of taking advantage of the green culture.
Over 200 people gathered July 26 and 27 at the Tomas Rivera Conference Center in the University of Texas at El Paso to learn about alternative energy technologies.
"Our privilege location in the Southwest and the nowadays energy savings needs are the predominant factors which led us to be progressive and look for energy conservation and efficiency alternatives," said County Judge Anthony Cobos.
The key note speaker of the event was Dr. Arnold Leitner, President and CEO of Skyfuel, and Chairman of the American Solar Energy Society (ASES) Solar Electric Division.
El Paso Solar Summit 2008 also gave members of the community and private sector the opportunity to know what is being done at the local and state level to use renewable sources of energy.
Ysleta Annex Groundbreaking
The county of El Paso will have its first energy efficient facility upon completion of the Ysleta Annex located at 9521 Socorro Road.
The Energy Star Criteria building designed under the Energy Star Criteria by a local firm will house at least nine departments which provide direct service to the public like the Justices of the Peace No. 5, District Clerk, County Clerk, County Attorney, Adult Probation and others.
The cost of the 30-thousand square foot project is estimated at $4.3 million.
The building will be open for the public by the end of 2008.
