Low-Income Students Awarded Scholarships
Five high school students from this area were awarded scholarships after they participated in the Fourth Annual "Justice for the Accused" photo and painting contest, sponsored by El Paso Criminal Law Group, Inc.
Participants had to show a reflection of justice in painting and/or in photograph.
Wendy Reyes, from Bel Air High School, won both categories and second place in the photo contest. She will be a freshmen this fall at UTEP, where she wants to major in Arts and Languages.
The Honorable Judge David Guaderrama, on behalf of the members of the association, awarded more than $12,000 in scholarships among the winners.
The award comes from attendance fees paid by lawyers who attended the annual El Paso Criminal Law Seminar held in Ruidoso, NM.
Scholarship recipients had to prove there from low-income families in order to participate. "We target this group because we believe that with out the financial help they might not otherwise be going to college," said Guaderrama.
The Scholarships provide for this year's winners are incomming freshmen in college. "We open the doors for education, as well as opportunities which could lead to them finding alternate funding resources."
Other winners were: Kassandra Kelly and James La fleur from Austin High School, Yennifer Mendez from Del Valle High School and Theron Smith from Hanks High School.
Student entries were exhibited on the 3rd flood of the County Courthouse from April to May, 2008.
Drug Court Graduation:
Over 80 youngsters and adults from the community received a certificate of completion for their successful achievement of the Drug Court Rehabilitation Program.
The graduation ceremony and luncheon was held on May the 22nd at the Life Church.
Keynote speakers for the event were El Paso County Judge, Anthony Cobos, El Paso County Sherriff,
Jimmy Apodaca, and the Democratic Candidate for Sheriff, Richard Wiles.
The Drug Court program emerged in 1999 as a response to help participants to rehabilitate and be productive citizens in our community.
