Local Seniors Showcases Talents During Cookouts

The cookouts at the county's senior citizen centers are becoming a very popular reunion place for dozens of participants of the nutrition program.

Every week senior citizens get together at the centers to socialize and learn to live a healthy life. The nutrition program specialist and the meal provider contractor are in charge of scheduling the weekly cookouts to entertain the seniors with something different than their regular meal.
"We don't want them just to stay at home and watch novelas," said Lewie Garcia, Assistant Manager of the El Paso City-County Nutrition Program.
"We always encourage them to keep themselves active socially, mentally and physically," he added.
In order to promote senior citizens healthy living every week they participate in different activities like dance contests, entertainment shows and Bingo. The nutrition program has 3,200 registered participants in the congregate program and delivers 1,200 meals daily to the participants of the homebound program.
