Whether you are planning a weekend road trip or a weeklong family expedition across state, be sure to plan ahead prior to starting your engine for a fun filled vacation and safe return home.

Here are some tips for a safe summer travel

Make sure your vehicle is ready to be driven during summer conditions:

Check tires to avoid a tire blow-out
Have fluids checked
Check safety belts are in working order
Check wipers
Battery

Get plenty of rest:

The night before
Take a break every 2 hours or very 100 miles
Avoid planning to work all day and drive all night
Travel with an awake passenger if all possible

Don’t pack items that will block the driver’s visibility
Properly secure items to avoid them flying in the event of a sudden stop/accident
Pack light to make travel less pricy

Avoid Distractions while driving:

Do not talk/text
Eat and drink
Focus on the road

Take a break if:

You keep yawning
Start to feel stiff
Your eyes are heavy
You find yourself daydreaming
You wander out of your lane of travel

Be prepared for the worst:

Have a cell phone and car charger
First-aid kit
A flashlight
Extra clothes/blankets
Basic tools
Emergency flares
Jumper cables
Nonperishable food

Protect your pooch:

Do not allow pets to ride in front seat

Distracts driver
Airbags deployed can also pose a hazard for pets

keep dog on a leash when loading and unloading from a vehicle
Crates or pet carriers are ways to restrain pets in cars
Be sure to secure crate or pet carrier
Or, consider a pet harness
Make sure pet I.D. tags are current and pet is chipped as required by law.

Car crashes are the number one killer of children 1 to 12 years old in the United States. Children younger than 8 years old must ride in a child safety seat or booster seat unless they are taller than 4 feet 9 inches.

EL PASO TEXAS- At approximately 7:40 AM this morning, Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a single motor vehicle accident at the 15200 block of Socorro Rd. in El Paso County, TX, where the driver was found pinned in a 1999 grey Ford Ranger. The Jaws of Life was used by Fabens Volunteer Firefighters to extract the driver, a 21 year old female who was transported by Life Ambulance along with a 20 year male passenger with non-life threatening injuries to a local area hospital.

Further investigation revealed the truck was traveling westbound on Socorro Rd. when the driver failed to negotiate a curve, lost control of the truck and collided into a tree near an irrigation canal north of Socorro Rd. Both occupants are from the El Paso area. Only the driver was wearing a seatbelt. The investigation continues.

EL PASO TEXAS- On Saturday, 06-15-13 at 9:50 PM, a Sheriff’s Deputy was patrolling the 300 block of Chisom Dr. (residential area) in Vinton, TX, when he saw a vehicle traveling over the designated speed limit. The driver took the Deputy on a small chase, along with five other occupants, after the driver of a 2004 red Ford F-150 accelerated the vehicle, made a u-turn and an abrupt turn into a dirt roadway and turned off its lights. The driver/Daisy Carrera of Anthony, NM, was apprehended at the 400 block of Chisom Dr. and charged with Evading Arrest/Detention with a Vehicle. The driver claimed the reason she did not stop was because her husband/occupant was intoxicated and the other occupants/children (7,8 & 10 year old) were not properly restrained inside the vehicle.

EL PASO TEXAS- On 06-15-13 at 12:34 AM, a Sheriff’s Deputy patrolling in Fabens, TX, was flagged down by the reporter at the 200 block of E. Main in reference to a theft/beer run. Additional information was received that the suspect was driving a grey passenger car and was last seen behind the alley of the store. The Deputy checked the area and caught up to the described vehicle at the end of the alley and initiated a traffic stop at Austin and N. Fabens on a grey 2005 Chevrolet Malibu. The driver in the said vehicle then fled in the vehicle and continued westbound on Alameda Ave. and stopped at the 15000 block of Alameda Ave. The Deputy made contact with the driver/Jose Luis Rocha, sole occupant, and took Rocha into custody. Rocha was charged with Evading Arrest & Detention with a Vehicle and Theft under/$50. The property was also recovered.

EL PASO TEXAS- The below are the results of the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office CLICK IT-OR-TICKET-IT enforcement from May 20th thru June 2, 2013. The Sheriff’s Office along with the Texas Department of Transportation and other local Law Enforcement agencies joined forces for the Annual 2013 Click-It or Ticket (CIOT) Campaign by utilizing a TXDOT grant for SEATBELT ENFORCEMENT.

The campaign brings public awareness to drivers and passengers driving on Texas roads to wear their seatbelt as required by Texas Law and to remind citizens that seatbelts can prevent serious bodily injury or death in a crash. Texas Law requires drivers and all passengers in a vehicle to be secured by a safety belt. Officers vigilant throughout El Paso County yielded the following results during the campaign efforts this holiday season.

EL PASO TEXAS- On 06-09-13 at 2:45 AM, Sheriff’s Deputies patrolling in the area of E. Main in Fabens, TX, saw a green Chevrolet pick-up driving reckless at the 600 block of E. Main. A traffic stop was attempted when the driver of the truck continued eluding Deputies for approximately 7 minutes when the driver finally came to a stop at the intersection of N. Fabens and Camp. The driver identified as Gonzalo Silva Jr. of Tornillo, TX, was taken into custody and placed under arrest for Evading Arrest & Detention with a Vehicle and DWI. Garcia had an outstanding warrant for Criminal Mischief O/$50-U/$500 at the time of his arrest and was recently released on April 27th for the offense of Obstruction & Retaliation.

EL PASO TEXAS- On 06-07-13 at 12:10 PM the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Strike Team/Interdiction unit spotted a vehicle with unauthorized sunscreen device (window tint) affixed to the vehicle which lead to a stop of the vehicle at the 5400 block of Dyer St., El Paso, Texas. During the interview Deputies noticed the driver appeared nervous. The driver later admitted to Deputies he had several pounds of marijuana in the vehicle. A search of the vehicle was done with the assistance of an El Paso Police Department canine unit where over 18 pounds of marijuana was located inside the trunk in a duffle bag.

EL PASO TEXAS- On 03-29-13 at approximately 12:30 AM a Hispanic male approximately 5’8” to 5’9” in height, stocky build with short hair entered a convenience store/7-11 located at 12370 Socorro Rd., in El Paso, Texas. The suspect entered the store and asked the victim/cashier for directions to the freeway. He then proceeded to grab two cases of beer from the display and walk out. The cashier was able to take away one of the beer cases. When the cashier attempted to take the second case of beer, the suspect pushed the cashier back. The suspect was last seen drive away in a dark colored Mitsubishi vehicle, possibly an Eclipse, with out of town plates.

EL PASO TEXAS- On June 3, 2013 at approximately 4:30 PM, Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a motor vehicle accident/rollover at Interstate Highway-10 MM 56 in Tornillo, TX. The victim, 35 year old Victoria Ojeda, originally from Atlanta, was traveling eastbound on IH-10 when she lost control of the vehicle and rolled over several times and landed on the westbound outside shoulder. The victim, sustained several fractures and was released from the hospital yesterday evening. The victim was traveling with two dogs and is now in search of one of her companions “Oscar” who was ejected at the time of the accident and last seen running south into the desert area (unknown if injured).

“Oscar” is a short tale, Boston Terrier with short white/black & dark brown hair. At the time, “Oscar” had a light blue collar and he is chipped. The Ojeda family has offered a reward for the return of “Oscar” and is asking the public for assistance to help find him.

EL PASO TEXAS- On June 3, 2013 Sheriff’s Deputies responded to IH-10 MM 56 in reference to a single motor vehicle accident. Further investigation revealed an Acura Integra was traveling eastbound on IH-10 when the driver lost control of the vehicle and crossed over the eastbound lanes and the median. The driver overcorrected while in the median and rolled over landing on the westbound outside shoulder. The driver, in her mid 30’s, was transported to a local area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver was traveling from San Diego to Atlanta with her two dogs when she reportedly fell asleep. At the time of the accident, one of the two dogs went missing. The dog is described as a dark/brownish terrier type and is chipped. The driver was wearing a seatbelt.

DRIVING TIPS FOR LONG JOURNEYS:

Someone who is tired could fall asleep at any time – fatigue impacts reaction time, judgment and vision, causing people who are very sleepy to behave in similar ways to those who are drunk.

Get plenty of sleep (at least six hours) the night before a long trip;
Travel at times when you are normally awake, and staying overnight rather than driving straight through
Scheduling a break every two hours or every 100 miles;
Stop driving if you become sleepy
Avoid not planning to work all day and then drive all night
Drink a caffeinated beverage. Since it takes about 30 minutes for caffeine to enter the bloodstream, find a safe place to take a 20-30 minute nap while you’re waiting for the caffeine to take effect
Avoid sleepy times of day
Traveling with an awake passenger if all possible

It’s time for a break if you have any of the following symptoms!

You keep yawning
You start to feel stiff
Your eyes feel heavy
You find yourself day-dreaming or staring at the car in front
The car wanders out of your lane
