CULTURAL DIFFERENCES

Cultural Differences?

Or, are we really that different

Commonality of humankind

Differences between people within any giving nation or culture are much greater than differences between groups.  Education, social standing, religion, personality, belief structure, past experience, affection shown in the home, and countless other factors will affect human behavior and culture.

(Gregorio Billikopf Encina University of California).

So, do these factor really make us different ?

Why Are Culture And Language Important ?

We know that America is a country of many races and cultures, and with each passing year more health care providers are recognizing the challenge of caring for patients from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.  Health care professionals and managers should have a basic understanding of the impact of culture and language on health care delivery in order to efficiently organize services that meet the needs of both the Institution and a diverse patient population.  El Paso is no different from the rest of America, that is why Border Children’s Mental Health Collaborative has taken the first steps to inform, train, and educate mental health care providers, staff, and care givers on the importance of becoming more culturally and linguistically competent organizationally and individually.

We are in the process of developing a presentation to address some of the issues faced by our clients and professionals.
More of how Border Children’s Mental Health Collaborative is addressing cultural and linguistic competency within the El Paso County will soon be available on this website.

January is Mentor Month

On January 26, 2009 at 9:30 AM, the County Judge and El Paso County Commissioners resolved to support a collaborative of agencies in their initiative to expand mentoring in the community.  The Border Children’s Mental Health Collaborative, Big Brothers Big Sisters of El Paso, El Paso Mental Health and Mental Retardation, The County of El Paso’s Juvenile Probation Department, and the Paso del Norte Children’s Development Center will charge forward ready to assist hundreds of children who are at risk by giving them a friendly hand to guide them through trying times.

With as little as four hours a month, a caring person over the age of eighteen can help a child develop into a happy, healthy adult that can one day give back to the community that they grew up in.  By becoming a mentor, a community member will not only give hope to a child who may be thinking about dropping out of school and struggling with the responsibilities of growing up, but one will feel the reward of becoming a part of a strong community initiative.

Call now to learn about the free events, activities, and training that you can participate in to help a child between the ages of six to seventeen, or email in the Volunteer Inquiry Form to the contact information below.

March of the 1500 - Support Mental Health

About 1,000 supporters of El Paso Mental Health Mental Retardation services (MHMR) marched Thursday evening from St. Patrick Cathedral to San Jacinto Plaza to show the urgency for additional State funds much needed in El Paso.

The rally was organized by MHMR to request additional funding. "Without more money, 1000 adults and 500 children would be placed on a waiting list and would not get help for medicines, treatment programs and other assistance for six months or longer, the crowd was told" (El Paso Times-Stephanie Sanchez, reporter).

The crowd marched into San Jacinto Plaza chanting "No Waiting list". BCMHC staff as well as representatives of other local agencies were present to show their support. AntiStigma man was also present at the event.

"W'ere going to have to take 1,500 people off their meds, and over a period of six months, all their symptoms will come back...they will be disruptive in school, there will be public disturbances, there will be arrests, there will be people going to the emergency rooms and asking for medications...it will be chaos and we know that" said Gary Larcenaire, CEO of El Paso MHMR.
