PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT- PHONE SCAM

TARGETING REGISTERED SEX OFFENDERS

March 16, 2018

El Paso, TX – The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is advising citizens of El Paso County of a telephone scam targeting registered sex offenders in El Paso County.

Registered individuals around El Paso County have received phone calls from individuals identifying themselves as employees of the Sheriff’s Office.

The scammers/offenders inform the registered sex offender they are non-compliant and have warrants which will result in an arrest if they fail to pay a specific fine. The VICTIM is told to buy Money Trax cards or gift cards for varying amounts to resolve their noncompliance. After the VICTIM purchases the money cards, the scammer requests the serial numbers displayed on the money cards so that the warrant can be dismissed. Those numbers are then turned into cash by the scammer depriving the victim of the money.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office or the Texas Department of Public Safety will NEVER contact registered sex offenders to pay fines or fees via this method.

If anyone has been a victim of these scams, please contact the proper authorities. The El Paso Police Department non-emergency number is 915-832-4400 and the Sheriff’s Office non-emergency number is 915-832-4408. Individuals who report to the Sheriff’s Office Sex Offenders Unit can call 915-538-2008 to verify if they are compliant.
