EL PASO COUNTY FLEET MANAGEMENT AND EL PASO COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE STREAMLINE VEHICLE INSPECTION FOR SHERIFF’S OFFICE FLEET

February 5, 2018

El Paso, TX – The El Paso County Fleet Management, Sheriff Richard D. Wiles, and the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office announce the opening of the Sheriffs’ Office Motor Pool State of Texas Official Vehicle Safety and Emission Inspection Station.

The in-house station officially opened this week and the station will perform all annual safety and emission inspections on all 350 vehicles assigned to the Sheriffs’ Office as the vehicles come in for their routine services. Prior to this in-house station, all the Sheriffs’ Office vehicles annual inspections were outsourced to local shops across the City.

The cost for each inspection is $7.00 for motorcycles and trailers, $18.50 for sedans, SUVs, vans and pickup trucks, and $40 for commercial vehicles.  This equates to yearly savings of $6,500 on inspection fees alone, $ 33,000 in fuel cost, and $52,500 in maintenance wear and tear repairs. In addition, an immeasurable amount of time loss moving these vehicles back and forth to outside vendors for the annual inspections. The cost to set up the station is approximately $15,000 and will pay for itself within the first few months of operation.

The in-house station at the Sheriff’s Office Motor Pool will be the second of two in-house County owned and operated Inspection Stations, the first station opened two years ago and is housed at the Fabens Warehouse Motor Pool.

This is yet another innovation within Fleet’s Management Action Plan to reduce waste, be more efficient, and move the County forward. Other government entities and publicly held companies are also moving to this in-house inspection concept to save funds and streamline operations.

*Please note the in-house stations are not open to the public for personal use.*
