14TH NATIONAL PRESCRIPTION DRUG TAKE BACK DAY

OCTOBER 28, 2017

October 19, 2017

El Paso, TX – The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public the opportunity to dispose of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs on Saturday, October 28th, 2017.

Disposal sites will be at the following Sheriff’s Office Patrol Stations on Saturday, October 28th, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

· Montana Patrol Station – 12501 Montana

· Clint Patrol Station – 190 San Elizario

· Vinton Station – 435 E. Vinton, Suite D

(The DEA cannot accept liquids or needles or sharps, only pills or patches.)  The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.)

The National Prescription Drug Take-Back addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Many Americans are not aware that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are at alarming rates, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that many abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away – both potential safety and health hazards.

“Prescription drug abuse is a huge problem and this is a great opportunity for folks around the country to help reduce the threat,” Rosenberg said.  "Please clean out your medicine cabinet and make your home safe from drug theft and abuse.”

During the 13th National Prescription Drug Take-Back a total weight (pounds): 900,386 lbs. (450 Tons) were collected nationwide. In Texas, a total of 72,361 lbs were collected.

EPCSO – PUBLIC USE OF INCINERATOR

October 2, 2017

El Paso, TX – In an effort to assist citizens of El Paso County from being victimized by identity theft, Sheriff Richard Wiles has authorized the use of the Sheriff’s Office incinerator by members of the public to destroy personal documents no longer needed.

The incinerator, which is normally used to burn narcotics, will be available to the public twice a year. The first burn for this year is scheduled for Saturday, October 7, 2017, from 9:00am to 11:00am.

The Sheriff’s Office understands citizens save documents that can accumulate and might not have the ability to safely dispose of them. Access to the incinerator will enable citizens of our community to feel secure knowing that information in their documents will not get into the wrong hands.

A Sheriff’s Office employee will be present to ensure all documents are completely destroyed. Only personal documents will be accepted with a household limit of the amount of paper that would fit into one 30 gallon trash bag. The Sheriff’s Office incinerator is compliant with rules and regulations set by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

The Sheriff’s Office Incinerator is located at 12501 Montana, behind the Montana Patrol Station and the Region VIII Training Academy.
