This annual event provided important safety tips and information on subjects like:

· Stranger Danger presented by McGruff

· Eddie Eagle presented Gun Safety

· Safety Pup presented 9-1-1 Emergency

· General Traffic & Pedestrian Safety presented by Deputy Dawg

Children learned and practiced traffic and pedestrian safety as they made their way through the simulated town on their bicycle.

Sheriff’s Safety Town also had some special guest appearances and speakers:

· Agent DANA.O from the U.S. Border Patrol

· And the Texas Department of Transportation

El Paso, TX – The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Pets Advancing Wellness and Success (PAWS) in Detention section attended the Myrna Deckert Summer Camp at the YMCA on Tuesday, July 21st, 2015.

Officers Alfredo Lopez and Gerardo Martinez along with Canine Cadet “Camila” introduced the PAWS program to the public, explaining its function and purpose.

Officers gave a presentation on dog safety; they also explained and demonstrated basic dog obedience techniques to the children attending the summer camp.

Officers explained to the public the PAWS Program was a vocational program for qualified inmates, as well as making the public aware of the Animal Rescue League where they can go to adopt a dog.

National Night Out is a FREE and open for ALL to attend, Tuesday, August 4th, 2015 from 6:00p.m. to 10:00p.m., the Sheriff’s Office headquarters building located at 3850 Justice Dr.

National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods a safer, better place to live. Together, we are making that happen.

National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community and provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.

El Paso, TX – El Paso County Sheriff Richard Wiles and Explorer Post 2005 will be hosting the 1st Annual Golf Tournament to benefit Crime Stoppers of El Paso on Thursday, July 30th, 2015.

Tournament is being held at Painted Dunes Desert Golf Course and tee time will be at 1p.m. At approximately 5p.m. during the awards ceremony; Sheriff Richard Wiles will be presenting Crime Stoppers with a check for the proceeds of the tournament. Mayor Oscar Leeser and First Lady Lisa Leeser will also be presenting Crime Stoppers with a check for the mayor’s monthly salary.

El Paso, Texas – El Paso County Sheriff’s Office has identified the deceased male from Socorro Texas yesterday as Javier Gonzalez, 59 years old. Mr. Gonzalez resided at 7871 Isaac, El Paso, Texas. Investigation is ongoing, no further information at this time.

El Paso, TX – The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Explorer Post 2005 hosted the 1st Law Enforcement Explorer Post Combined Training and Competition July 6th – 10th, 2015.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Explorer Post 2005, El Paso Police Department Explorer Post, Anthony Police Department Explorer Post, Horizon City Explorer Post, and the Border Patrol Explorer Post took part in this week’s activities.

Sheriff Richard Wiles gave closing remarks during the closing ceremony and assisted with the presentation of trophies and awards.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Explorer Post 2005 took home several trophies in the following categories:

· 1st & 2nd Place in Burglary in Progress

· 1st Place in Arrest and Search

· 2nd Place in Traffic Stop/Misdemeanor  

· Sheriff’s Office Explorer Post 2005 was also awarded the Trophy Cup for the highest overall score.

Captain Charles Peters from the U.S. Army National Guard/Texas Army National Guard has invited the explorers from the different posts to be recognized by Congressman Beto O’Rourke during his visit to the Texas National Army Reserve Center located at 11701 Montana, on Saturday July 18th, 2015, from 9:00a.m. - 10:00a.m.

El Paso, TX – Sheriff Richard Wiles will be presenting closing remarks and completion trophies for the participants of the 1st Law Enforcement Explorer Post Training and Competition.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office Explorer Post 2005, and various other law enforcement posts from the El Paso County took part in this week’s activities.

This week they conducted live exercises, and classroom instruction on various subjects. Explorers learned how to perform daily tasks Sheriff’s Office deputies encounter on a daily basis such as: arrest and search, burglary in progress, traffic stop, obstacle course and active shooter.

El Paso, TX - The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office will be hosting a FREE car seat check – up event, Friday, July 24th, 2015.

In partnership with University Medical Center of El Paso, and the Texas Department of Transportation, Sheriff’s Office deputies will be checking car seats for proper installation.

The FREE car seat check – up event will take place Friday, July 24th, 2015, from 8:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. at the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Training Academy parking lot; 12501 Montana.

Please bring your children with you, to allow Sheriff’s Office deputies to determine if their car seat fits them well. 4 out of 5 car seats are used incorrectly. Could yours be one of them?

Please arrive early; car seats will be issued out on a first come first serve basis. Lines may be cut before end time if needed based on availability of car seats. To qualify for a free car seat you must be a Texas resident and low income to qualify.

El Paso, TX - The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office increased DWI patrols from June 26th – July 7th, 2015.

Sheriff’s Office deputies issued the following citations during the 10-day period:

· (12) during the course of regular duty hours

· (3) during the TXDOT Impaired Driving Mobilization

· (1) during the TXDOT Comprehensive grant

16 total arrests for Driving While Intoxicated Offenses

Two grants provided by the Texas Department of Transportation allowed for additional deputies to patrol the streets of El Paso County during this period.

Teens from around the El Paso County, who attended the youth academy, were presented various topics from various sections within the Sheriff’s Office:

Sheriff Wiles presented the teens with a completion certificate on the last day of the youth academy.

El Paso, TX – Sheriff Wiles and the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office would like to wish you a safe and fun “Fourth of July Weekend.”

ALL fireworks have been banned in the County of El Paso.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has extended El Paso County's fireworks ban until the morning of July 5th.
The extension allows for a full ban on the sale, use and possession of fireworks in the unincorporated areas until 7 a.m. July 5th

Violation of the ban is considered a Class C misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $500.


The ban DOES not impact professional firework displays through out the county of El Paso.

Sheriff’s Deputies will also be focusing on DWI patrols in high-risk locations at times when alcohol-related crashes are most frequent.

Officer Lopez distributed pamphlets and held a presentation for the public on the purpose and function of the PAWS in Detention program.

Officer Lopez also demonstrated basic dog obedience with both canine cadets.

Those in attendance were given dog safety tips, and various other information pamphlets.
