 On 04-25-14 a group of 15 officers from Rio de Janeiro and other parts of Brazil graduated at the Sheriff’s Office Headquarters after a week of tactical training from the El Paso County Sheriff's Office Special Reaction Team (SRT). The Brazilian officers were given training on jail cell extractions, use of tactical shields, riot control, use of Tasers and other tactics. The training was done with the assistance of the Region VIII Training Academy facilities to include the firing range as well as the use of the Detention Facilities. Detention Officer L. Trevino led the training and was requested by the Brazilian officers due to his certifications, knowledge, and experience in these tactics. This training will assist the Brazilian Officers with security measures that will be used in the World Cup soccer tournament and the 2016 Summer Olympics.

On 04-26-14 at about 1:40pm, Sheriff’s Office Deputies were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident at the 17700 block of Island Tornillo Rd. in Fabens. Once Deputies arrived, they saw that a maroon Honda Accord had crashed into to a utility pole. The investigation revealed that a 16 year old driver had taken her parent’s vehicle without permission and was on her way to Juarez Mexico.  While traveling east on Island Tornillo Rd., she grabbed her cell phone and was text messaging taking her eyes off the roadway. That is when the vehicle went off the road and crashed into the utility pole. The driver was cited for no Driver’s License and was transported to Del Sol with minor injuries.

On 04-27-14 at about 9:45am, a Sheriff’s Office Deputy was patrolling at the 700 block of Reidson Grove St in Canutillo Tx. Where he observed a suspicious vehicle (white Chevrolet Uplander) with a person inside it parked along a wall. As the deputy made a U turn to approach the vehicle, the driver sped off. The deputy attempted to catch up to the vehicle as it sped through several residential streets ignoring stop signs. The vehicle drove into the desert stopping near an arroyo just off the 500 block of Anthony Rd in Canutillo and the driver fled on foot. Deputies searched for the driver and were assisted by U.S. Border Patrol Agents, Tx DPS Troopers, and Anthony Police. The driver was never located. A check of the van revealed that it was reported stolen out of Sunland Park NM. The van was processed by the Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Unit and was impounded.

On 04-26-14 at about 5:12pm, Sheriff’s Office Deputies were dispatched to a motorcycle accident at the 4500 block of Flager St. in east El Paso County. Upon arrival deputies found a blue Honda motorcycle on its side and a 38 year old man on the ground with severe head injuries (he was not wearing a helmet). The Montana Vista First Responders and Life Ambulance arrived and tended to the driver. The driver was transported to Del Sol Medical center with serious injuries. Sheriff’s Office Special Traffic Investigators and Crime Scene Unit were called to the scene. The preliminary investigation revealed that the motorcycle was traveling northbound on Flager St. at a curve located at the 4500 block. The 38 year old drove onto the unimproved right shoulder (gravel area), lost control, and flipped the motorcycle over several times and landed in the desert area. At this time it is unknown if alcohol, speed, or high winds in the area were contributing factors to this motor vehicle accident.  The driver remains in critical condition.

On 04-11-14, a one day Child Support Warrant Round up was conducted in El Paso County. It was a collaborative effort between the Texas Attorney General’s Office, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, and the El Paso County Constables to catch those who have failed to keep up with their child support payments. Ten 2 man teams were deployed throughout the entire El Paso area in search of these wanted subjects. In all, 12 subjects were arrested: 10 of those were for failure to pay child support, 1 was for a criminal misdemeanor warrant, and 1 was for a felony warrant. The total bond amounts were over $182,900.

Each year, the second week of April is dedicated to men and women who serve as public safety telecommunicators. El Paso County participated in this national event with County Commissioners signing a Resolution that declares April 13th through April 19thPublic Safety Telecommunicators Week”. This important and crucial role is played by telecommunicators, dispatchers, communication operators, and radio control personnel who utilize telephones, radios, computers and technical skills to provide support for law enforcement and fire services throughout the city and county. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Communications Section is a 24-hour, 7 days-a-week operation. It provides a service of radio communications, computer aided dispatch (CAD), and inquiries from TCIC/NCIC on wanted, missing, and stolen property to numerous agencies within El Paso County. The Communications Center provides radio service to numerous agencies such as law enforcement, volunteer fire departments, medical examiners, and courts of law. They are the unseen first responders that do many tasks at once and their hard work and dedication does not go unnoticed. All residents of El Paso County are encouraged to extend their appreciation to public safety telecommunicators.

On 04-12-14 at about 4:15pm, Sheriff’s Office Deputies were dispatched to a house fire at 109 SE. River St. in Fabens, Texas. Upon arrival Deputies observed a blue in color mobile home fully engulfed in flames. The Fabens Fire Department was already on scene and firefighters were attempting to extinguish the fire. Everyone in the home, 2 adults and 6 children, were able to get out safely before the fire spread to the entire home. The damage to the mobile home was severe and was considered a total loss. The County Fire Marshal arrived on the scene and declared the loss at approximately 12,000. The exact location and why the fire started was not determined. Representatives from the Red Cross were called to assist the family.

On 04-13-14 at about 3:15am Sheriff’s Office Deputies were dispatched to motor vehicle accident (rollover) at the 900 block of Gato Rd. in west El Paso County. Once on scene, Deputies discovered a black Scion laying on it’s left side inside a concrete lined ditch with the 20 year old male driver standing by the vehicle. The investigation revealed that the Scion was travelling northbound on Gato Rd. and the driver was not able to negotiate the curve, lost control, and crashed into the concrete ditch. The driver suffered a cut to his hand and was treated at the scene.

On 04-12-14 just after 2:00am, Sheriff’s Office Deputies responded to a motor vehicle accident involving an ATV at the intersection of Socorro Rd and FM 1110 in San Elizario Tx. Upon arrival, deputies learned that two males were on a white Yamaha ATV travelling east on the 12500 block of Socorro Rd when they ran the red light at the 1300 block of FM110 and collided with a black Ford Mustang that was crossing the intersection. The teenagers (16 years old and 17 years old) operating the ATV were ejected and seriously injured. Both were transported to Del Sol Hospital, one in stable condition, and the other in critical condition.

    The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office has teamed up with a non-profit organization called Horses Unlimited Rescue and Education Center Inc. to help the community in cases where horses need to be rescued. Sheriff’s Deputies and the Sheriff’s Office Animal Control Unit partners together with Horses Unlimited Rescue and Education Center in cases of abused or neglected horses, lose horse calls, and will also assist in cases where an owner no longer wants a horse.

Horses Unlimited Rescue and Education Center Inc. also offers:

* Horse training for $500 a month which includes feeding the horse.
* Horse lessons over nutrition health and care for $30 for 2 hours.
* If people in the community cannot take care of a horse because of health or    behavioral
problems, Horses Unlimited Rescue and Education Center Inc. will take them for free. (They charge a $75.00 pick up fee)
* They will go to people’s houses to answer any questions for free
* They will go to the houses to work with horses one on one for two hours in exchange for a bale
of hay.

They are located at 15415 Buckwheat St. in Far East El Paso County and are open Monday through Saturday from 9:00am-5:00pm (summer hours are from 9am-8pm)
