On 01-31-2014 just before 11:00am, Sheriff’s Deputies from the Vinton Station responded to the 1600 block of Hannibal in Canutillo, in reference to a possible “chemical” bomb inside a mailbox. Once Deputies arrived, they found a plastic bottle with black burned residue inside it and saw that the mail box was damaged. The home owners reported hearing a loud “bang” the night before and in the morning saw that the mail box was damaged. The West Valley Fire Department and County Fire Marshalls responded to the scene along with the Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Unit. Fire Marshalls advised that this type of bomb is known as a “works” or “worx” bomb. The Fire Marshalls service advised that these types of chemical bombs have been deployed in several locations within the City as well. Agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) and the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) also responded to the scene.
