FABENS, TX- MVA RESULTS IN A PEDESTRIAN FATALITY

El PASO, TX- Tuesday evening, on 11-08-2011 at approximately 5:50 PM, Deputies were dispatched to the 600 block of N.E. “G” in Fabens, TX, in reference to a Motor Vehicle Accident involving a Pedestrian. Deputies arrived and observed a Hispanic female lying on the ground. Life Ambulance and Fabens Volunteer Fire Department were immediately summoned to the scene. The driver of a grey 2004 Hyundai Sonata was still on scene.

A preliminary investigation revealed the driver, a 24 year old Hispanic male from Fabens, identified as Ramon Mendiaz, was traveling westbound at the 600 block of N.E.”G” approaching the intersection of N.E. “2nd” and N.E. “G” when the VICTIM/Pedestrian, identified as Maria Favela (69), crossed the street onto the driver’s designated lane of traffic thereby striking the Pedestrian.  

According to witnesses, the driver was not traveling at a high rate of speed.  The driver claims he did not see the pedestrian crossing the street.

The pedestrian sustained a broken leg and lacerations to the facial area. She was transported by Life Ambulance to a local area hospital. The driver of the vehicle was cited for No Operator’s License and Fail to Maintain Financial Responsibility. The driver has not been criminally charged, however, was taken into custody and booked into the El Paso County Jail Annex for outstanding traffic warrants. 

At approximately 8:45 PM, the Sheriff’s Office received updated information the VICTIM/Pedestrian died at the hospital.  El Paso County Sheriff’s Office/Special Traffic Investigators were summoned to the scene for further investigation. At this time it is unknown if the pedestrian died as a result from the injuries sustained at the accident.
