LABOR DAY PERIOD DWI ENFORCEMENT RESULTS

DWI ENFORCEMENT
EL PASO, TX- The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office in coordination with Texas Department of Transportation Education & Enforcement (TXDOT)conducted a DWI Enforcement wave during the period of August 21, 2009 thru September 7th, 2009. During that time period, extra officers were utilized to focus DWI patrols within high risk locations during times when alcohol-related crashes are most frequent. Our goal was to reduce the number of fatal or serious injury collisions. Working during hours determined to be peak impaired driving hours, Deputies worked a total of 167 hours during this LABOR DAY HOLIDAY enforcement period- 8 hours a night in various locations within El Paso County, TX. No major traffic accidents were reported during this time period in the unincorporated areas of the county.

Statistics from the Texas Department of Transportation indicate Texas leads the nation when it comes to the number of traffic fatalities where the driver or motorcycle operator was legally drunk. Last year, Texas experienced an increase in the number of motor vehicle traffic fatalities. The 2008 death toll of 3,468 was an increase of 0.20% from the 3,461 deaths recorded in 2007. In 2008, there were 975 people killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes where a driver was under the influence of alcohol. This is 28.1% of the total number of people killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes.
